I'M STILL ALIVE!

Ok, so I haven't been blogging for a while, sorry about that. It's just because whenever I have the free time, my mom and her friends would take me out somewhere in the city and when we get back at night, I would be too tired to write. But no worries, I'll keep you guys updated :)

L.A. Weekend - August 21-23
We were off to Los Angeles for the weekend. Departure time: 6:08PM. Estimated duration of flight: approximately 1 hour. Actual departure time: 10:00+PM. What happened? Mechanical failure, they said. We were on the plane around 5PM something and they kept us locked in there for more than 3 hours! They said to stay put and that we would leave as soon as possible but it seems that they were having problems with the plane. So there we were, waiting impatiently, locked inside the plane until finally, they said that the plane cannot fly and requested everyone to please hop off it. :| great. All the waiting for nothing. But at least they immediately transferred everyone to a new plane and we were able to arrive at LA at around 12 midnight (and as an incentive, they gave all passengers $150 worth of discount on our next flights locally). Mom's senior auntie and uncle were waiting for us at LAX the whole time :( But at least we were finally there. We ate super late dinner at Denny's. It was already around 1AM. Then we finally went to their house. Their place was gorgeous. All their furnitures and furnishings were from Italy (I guess 'cause they lived there for a while) and it just feels so classy and elegant. It was nice staying there but as soon as I got to our room, all I could think of doing was putting on my pajamas and going straight to sleep. All the waiting made me so exhausted x.x

Day 2 of LA. Mommy and I went to Universal Studios. Too bad I only could go to once place. I wanted to go to California Adventures or Knott's Berry Farm or Disney Land or some other places but we only had one day and we were leaving tomorrow already and it was already 12PM. Uncle gave us $200 to spend so I bugged mom to get us the priority or first-in-line pass (in order to save time, I thought) but no, she only got us the normal ticket, which was okay too. I was so excited for this trip 'cause I get to spend time with Shaun. But it took us close to an hour to find each other, haha! I told him to meet us at the Universal Studios shop but I didn't know there were two of them in the park and yeah, we were waiting in one while he was at the other one. And the weather was really really REALLY hot. But at least we managed to find him :)) We then went to the world-famous studio tour and waited in line for another hour or so. After that, we rode the Simpson's ride, which was a virtual roller-coaster type ride. The line took another hour too. Mom was getting tired so we decided to just go around the park once and to just go out already. Shaun took us to a mall, which was unfortunately closed by the time we arrived (their malls close early x.x) so we decided to just have dinner somewhere. I was craving rice like crazy! I have been eating burgers, bread or sandwiches the whole time so I was really happy when we ate at a Chinese restaurant and had amazing white steamed rice :P After treating us to a fantastic dinner (thanks Shaun! >:D<) he then drove us home and stayed for a while to talk with mom's auntie and uncle. Auntie then gave us ginataan to eat (I was so full!!) and uncle gave us coke. But then Shaun left and we found out that Uncle even grilled some BBQ kebabs supposedly for him x.x So I ended up eating it too..huhu. At least I was able to sleep soundly that night.

Day 3 we just spent at home until our flight around 3 that afternoon, then we were back to San Francisco (with twice the baggage we came with! Uncle kept giving us stuff to take home).

First Day of School - August 24
I wouldn't call it a "bad start" but I had a good amount of exercise right before my first class. Imagine going to Bellarmine Hall, thinking your class would be there. But then the student would tell you that no, your class is at SOM. So I would walk all the way to SOM only to find out that wait, my class WAS at Bel. So I had to rush back to the first classroom I went to, which was on the opposite side of the campus (and you had to cross a street too, imagine how far that was). But I'm not done yet. The teacher finally confirmed that yup, our classroom was really at SOM. So I had to go back and forth 4 times between classrooms to have my first class at USF. And we had to do this during the hottest day in San Francisco. Yeah, it was EXTREMELY hot. Like, Ateneo in the summer hot (oddly enough). No one wore long pants nor t-shirts. Everyone was in shorts and dresses and get this, they were giving away free Coke Zero's on campus. haha! Consumer Behavior made such an impression noh? I'm just happy I had a friend and the whole class feeling the same way. This was the only class I took alone.

My other 3 classes were fine. At least Daniel was there too. I didn't like going to places not knowing anyone x.x Generally, our professors only discussed the syllabus and let us all go. Jasmine came over our apartment during the break and we shared ube bulilits (which basically was a small pandesal with ube as palaman) for merienda. It was so nice to see her again! So I can say that my first day was fairly okay. After that mom and her friend (Tita Pining for future reference) fetched me to stay over their house 'cause I didn't have classes the next day.

Hello San Francisco - August 25
We were up early in the morning to explore downtown San Francisco. We went to the Golden Gate Bridge (JC! I remembered that I promised to jog it once for you... uhm... haha! Yeah, I'll still try!) and it was so cold unlike the weather yesterday (yeah, tito said the weather there is really that unpredictable)! It was really windy and there were lotsa people taking pictures and whatnot. We just walked like 3 meters across the bridge and decided that that was okay already. haha! We then went to Pier 39. We just walked around the streets and it was cool to see those street musicians and entertainers on the sidewalks. We rode the cable car to reach the other side, went around a mall, then went back. We then drove through Lombard Street, the crookedest road in the world, supposedly, then went back to the house. It was a short yet fun trip. I would've wanted to go to some places like the Ripley's Museum and the Wax museum and I would've wanted to try and eat crab and go biking at the Golden Gate but I guess we lacked the time to do so. Maybe some other time, right?

Second Day - August 26
It was okay. Back to normal, the locals said 'cause the weather was really really cold again. And this time during my 2 hour break, Evelyn and Andrew came to visit. It's always a warm happy feeling when our "buddies" come and visit us. :) And after my class, mom came to fetch me again because we were off to Las Vegas the next day. Mom has a high school reunion type going on and she decided to tag me along so that at least I get to go to Las Vegas somehow.

Viva Las Vegas - August 27-28
Up early in the morning to prepare for our trip. Our flight was at 6AM but we missed it x.x There were complications with the ticket reservations and we weren't able to check in on time so we were waitlisted for the next flight at 8AM. At around 9 something, we landed. And it was a desert so of course, it will be hot (I think I'll get sick with this hot-cold weather). We stayed at this big rented house and the TV became my best friend during the whole trip. The first day, mommy and her friends spent talking and bonding with each other. They all spoke Illocano (which I didn't understand) so I just spent the whole day (and night) watching TV and eating whatever snack mom would bring to me. I wanted to go out but I guess this wasn't my trip and I should just follow whatever they wanted to do. Went to bed when I was sleepy and I was happy at that least Shaun called me up to keep me company until we both slept.

Day 2 and we're finally off to the strip! Did I say it was hot? Cause it was SUPER hot. My feet got tan lines from my slippers and my skin went so dry after walking around. But it was fun! Too bad I wasn't able to ride the roller coasters cause the wind was blowing too hard and they said that it wasn't safe. We went to the Coke shop and M&M's world then went back home. And we returned to the strip at around 9PM at night. I wanted to go to the world's biggest buffet too but everyone kept saying that it wasn't worth it with me cause I only eat a little. Guys, I always eat this way ok? And Shaun, I don't eat like a mouse mind you! Also wanted to watch a show at least, the Blue Man group or Cirque du Soleil but I guess we didn't have enough time to do so too. At least I was able to watch the water show in front of... some hotel I forgot x.x And I was also able to go to Caesar's Palace and another place to look around and take pictures (sorry I can't post them yet cause they are in the other camera).

Day 3 was a date between the TV and I again. I liked watching "Say yes to the dress". It's a show wherein bride-to-be's choose their wedding dresses, that simple. Haha! But it was entertaining at least. Our flight was at 7:55PM and we arrived back at SFO at around 9:10PM and here I am back in my bed in Tita Pining's house.

So there you go! My update for the past week. I still have a homework due on Tuesday but I still don't have my book for it so I don't know how I'll go about it yet x.x But I'll figure something out.

The wind is really blowing outside! It's howling like crazy! I hope there won't be a storm or something, whatever they call it here x.x

Time to sleep!

Tata! And see you on my next update! :)

(my mom's friends came with us to check things out. they are the ones talking in the background)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BROTHER DEAREST!

After waking up counting the hours 'til our flight.
After having one last family dinner at Yakimix.
After being on the plane for 13 hours and going through customs and immigration for roughly 2 hours, we are here.

HELLO SAN FRANCISCO!

First impressions? Well, I actually developed one before departure. I made a new American friend named David (yay! first friend!) while waiting for our plane to depart from the Philippines. I was playing Plants vs Zombies and he was asking what it was about :)) He's currently a nursing student in the US. And I made another American friend (oh, shux, didn't get her name x.x) while on the plane to San Fo. She is working in the Philippines and has been there for roughly 18 months, leaving her children behind in the States so she was pretty excited to be back. Wow, they are friendly people eh? Armand was right, they love small talk :P

We were then fetched by my mom's friend Pining. We will be staying with her at Daly City until my classes start on Tuesday. We had mashed potatoes, Popeye's fried chicken and sotanghon for dinner then everyone retired to bed, except for me. What I did? Straight to Facebook. HAHA! I had to let everyone know I made it safely here right?

After struggling with the internet connection for a few hours, I gave up and decided to just sleep to adjust my body clock; Though, I don't know how many hours I actually slept. x.x 4:00AM here, I was awake. 5:00AM, I decided to just take a shower. 6:00AM, I was finally able to fix the internet connection and at almost 7:00AM, I'm here blogging. :)

It's super nice to be talking to some friends too! Steph and Elie to name a few. And everyone who commented on my status on Facebook! KEEP IN TOUCH GUYS! AND I'M EXCITED FOR YOUR TRIPS TOO!!! :)

Plans for the day:
1. Visit my dorm (fingers crossed, I hope it will not be as bad as people say it is)
2. Campus tour (if Daniel will make it)
3. SHOPPING!!!

Let's do this!!!

MOVING

Ok, first of all, I've decided to move to Blogspot instead of Tumblr for a number of reasons:

1. Not everyone can comment on Tumblr (or I can't figure out how it exactly works yet)
2. I think this is a better site for blogging and Tumblr is more for posting pictures
3. They have AWESOME gadgets here! From a Skype button (though I'm not sure if it's working x.x) to mini-games to world clocks to a chat box! These features sealed the deal for me that's why I'm here!

I have been transferring my previous entries here from Tumblr all night after packing last minute and I've decided that I don't want to go to sleep yet for two reasons:

1. I'd rather sleep on the plane on the way to the United States (oh how I dread that moment x.x)
2. I'm a bit too emo to sleep

I've been receiving text messages and wall posts from my very close and dear friends wishing me good luck and a safe trip tomorrow... or later, I mean. And, everything is just so... overwhelming. I did not expect this much people to text or message me. I'm utterly touched with everyone :') This made it harder to leave I guess. It seems like I'm leaving so much behind, my family, my friends, familiarity, comfort... I don't know if other JTAers will feel this the moment they are about to leave (let me know guys). Or maybe it's because I'm going there alone (technically, mom's coming with me but you get the point) unlike other people who will be going to their destination countries in groups. They know who they are staying with, they know what they want to do or where they'd want to travel to and they have a constant companion during the whole trip. But for me, I have no such idea or plans. We're only two in USF and my co-JTAer is already there. I don't even know who my roommate will be. Will she be nice? I really do hope so. I don't even know if we will get the chance to travel unlike other JTAers 'cause my parents are strict. I don't know if we will have fun, if I will meet enough friends, if the weather is okay etc. There are so many uncertain things and for an OC gal like me, I'm feeling a bit anxious. We were so excited to leave but as I've mentioned in my previous entry, when the moment comes, you don't know what to feel anymore. Yes, I'm still excited of course... Maybe I'm just a bit nervous... or hungry... or both. Haha! Kidding. But this is just temporary. It's part of the fun right? So bring it on I tell you. BRING.IT.ON.

So, maybe I didn't really want to sleep now 'cause I want to savor my last hours here at home, lying here in my bed, in my room and everything else. I want to savor the feeling of knowing what to do tomorrow, of knowing what's for dinner and knowing that I have my friends and family here at my side no matter what. These are only some of the things I'm concerned with but what the hell. That's why I wanted to JTA in the first place. To have a bit of adventure, to tackle the unknown and come out of it alive and a brand new person, changed hopefully for the better. Besides, by this time on the other side of the world, I should be awake too, going to class, studying. So might as well practice too, right? Yeah, maybe.

So okay. My flight is at 10:30PM tonight so I have roughly 15 hours left to just bum and absorb everything in. 4 months away from home isn't that bad... right? 4 months living alone should sound fun. For someone whose culture is heavily family-oriented, I'll let you know when I finally have my fun. It's my first time leaving home x.x

I will miss my family. I will miss my friends. That I'm certain.

But it's time to move out, move into a new chapter of my life, move to discover myself, move to learn. :)

GOOD BYE PHILIPPINES! I'LL SEE YOU IN DECEMBER!

THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW

HOMG.

and I don’t think I’m ready yet x.x

I’m done packing (for now) and I’ve the time to just stop and think…
Am I really ready?
Well, I don’t have a choice now do I? I’m leaving in 2 days, whether I’m ready or not.

We’ve been waiting for this moment for a few months but when the moment finally comes, I actually don’t know what to do with it x.x

ENJOY! MINSAN LANG ITO!
YOU’VE BEEN THROUGH HELL JUST TO GET TO THIS POINT!

I am excited, for sure. To experience a whole new country, to study in a new place but most importantly, to be independent. We can’t be with our parents forever and this JTA experience would be a “test-run”, I guess, to live life on my own. Can I handle it? We’ll see…

BRING IT, SAN FRANCISCO!

Anyway, don’t want to be emo yet. So yesterday, we had this awesome despedida party for the whole JTA-LM block (and friends). Everyone dressed up as kiddies or wore their high school uniforms once again. I confess, I miss our ICA uniform. At least we don’t have to spend time thinking about what to wear to school every single day.

We had games, won prizes, took lotsa pictures (visit my Facebook page), ate lots of junk, bonded with friends, took more pictures and that’s about it! But it was hella fun! The night ended a bit emotionally for me too ‘cause I was the first one leaving. It is nice to see all my friends give me hugs, telling me to take care, they are excited for me and to have a nice flight. You’ll never get that kind of send-off anywhere else. I was with my LM family.

Aww… I truly thank God for giving me such blockmates for JTA. Also for giving us such professors to teach us :) It was a wonderful experience! Time to move on to another chapter.

What I want to do in the United States first and foremost is to eat my very first Big Mac. Yeap, I’ve never had one and I’ve made it one of my goals to achieve while I am there. What else? To hopefully experience snow. Hopefully I’m able to go somewhere to do that. NEW YORK! Yeah right, I wish. :))

Hmm… a bucket list would be nice right now. I’ll try to post one when I get the chance. Wait for it :>

‘til next time! TATA!

DOGGIE!

My first advanced birthday gift from my brother.

This is Venice.
She is a Siberian Husky.

WHEN IT'S NOT ROUGH IT ISN'T FUN

Okay! Hello blogging world! It’s been a long time since I did this. :))

I made this blog specifically to record my JTA experience… Hmm… Come to think of it, I should have started earlier in order to fully capture the whole experience x.x But oh well!
Let me just summarize it!

Pre-JTA was divided into 3:
1. Application
2. Choosing of the destination school
3. JTA Sem 1

Application:
- Mr. Ang’s sweet talkin’ did the trick. I never really wanted to go JTA at the first place. But he was so convincing! :))
- The application process was quite simple, we just needed to pass a bunch of papers but waiting was the worse part. We had to stalk the SOM bulletin board for 2 weeks just to know if we were accepted (Right Elie? haha!)
-The list went out minutes before our Law Midterms. Wrong timing. I was too excited to focus on the test x.x

Choosing of the destination school
- It was according to the ranking you got. Higher ranked people got to choose their schools first. I was ranked… uhm… 70 something, I think (ok, I’m very forgetful x.x). I think it was an okay rank, out of I think around 200.
- Schools are flashed in the OHP and crossed out each time a student takes it.
- I didn’t know where I wanted to go until the moment Mr. Ang called my name :|
Me: (OMG, where should I go?? China? US? China? US?)
Mr. Ang: Ong, Fiona
Me: uuuuhhhhhmmm….. (HOOMAAAGOOSSH! DECIDE NOW!)
Me: uhh… University… of San Francisco
Me: (it’s a sign. it’s directly in front of me)
Mr. Ang: Okay. The tuition paying slot?
Me: NO! haha!
Mr. Ang: Kanina ang tagal mag-isip pero dito instant ah :))

JTA Sem 1
- One word: HELL.
(6 hour breaks, 7:30AM Law classes with recit and quizzes the day after a Marketing class until 8:00PM, going home everyday around 9PM, Philo readings and more readings, Marketing Paper Passes, WACs, Finance Paper and more papers, and more Labor Law readings and more, lots more)

Only one thing helped me survive… our JTA-LM Block.

They are the ones who made the whole thing bearable. Without them, I don’t know what would’ve happened to me :| And actually, because of them, I can already say that JTA is already worth it from this point. With lovable characters such as Santis and Jerinae, our amazing amazing professors, movie nights, baboy sessions, card games, and not to mention all our KFM questions.. everything. I will never be able to experience having an air-conditioned classroom as your bahay in Ateneo, have the Danny Chan and de Vera experience with the kind of chemistry our class has, the solidarity, the love, the feeling of family.

Hmm… I think I can end with that note :) A quick summary of my JTA experience so far.

To all you guys, I just want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH! From the bottom of my heart, I am truly lucky and grateful to have this bunch as my block >:D<

To my Marketing group mates, THANK YOU FOR YOUR HARD WORK!!! Live Life Live! I can truly say everything paid off at the end. And not only for that, but you were there for me during my low days. Alam niyo na kung kailan yun, haha! Basta, thank you so so much!

To my non-JTA blockmates, I MISS YOU GUYS!!! Dinner please before we leave :(

To my other friends, LABAN LANG! If you think school is tough right now, just remember, we’ve been through worse, and we made it. Kaya niyo rin yan! :)

7 days.
